and I have spent some time trying to find the answer --- no luck so far - - so please my kind Excel Gurus, I humbly ask your assistance....

I am looking for the best chart to represent the following bits of information - I am not certain if I need to make a combination chart to accurately represent the data-- or how I would search templates to find what I'm looking for....

1. Amount Budgeted for a project (Broken down by month)

2. Actual Expenses for the project (Broken down by month also)

3. The percent of difference (+ / -) of the total project budget --

Have I clouded the water too much?

Thank you very kindly :)

Hi tenchie,

I think two-column bar chart, with each set representing a month, and one column showing the diff. is appropriate.

Regards,

thank you Faseeh - I am still learning all the tricks and such to make great Excel Charts - I will try it today :)

have a wonderful day

actually something just occurred to me - I have our budgeted amount (one column) the actual expenses (2nd column) and then the + / - would be represented in a third column?

Thanks again :)

Please see this tutorial, hope it helps:

Regards,

I do believe that I have thoroughly confused myself now - let me try to give some more details

we have two vendors we deal with company A and company B both of which we have a budgeted amount for (again by month) and an actual amount (by month also) the two companies combine make up our total project cost

so I'm looking how to effectively show - the month cost vs actual for both companies including the + / - value for both of them - and the overall + / - value for the entire project cost ....

wow is that even possible?

Please see this one:

Regards,

Thank you once again Faseeh - I will try these - did you just throw those together for me?

if not you are a speedy hunter that you found it so quickly :)

Thank you once again - if I need additional help I'll be sure to come back :)

Hi tenchie,

Neither throwing it all-together, nor a speedy hunter, just had a call from my mom for dinner :D

You are welcome any time!!

Regards,

I'm still working on getting the data to work together - would it be better to have the figures represented as the bar codes and the + / - as a line indicator?

I am only guessing here as I have a lot of data and don't want to 'muddy the waters' and make it to hard to follow -

thanks again

Tenchie

Hui -- thank you :) I managed to find this - and I think this might be just what I"m looking for

http://peltiertech.com/Excel/ChartsHowTo/DeviationColumnCharts.html

- but here's a question I have two different companies I am comparing this data to and have an over total budget as well - is it possible to show both without too much clutter?

I believe this is showing just one company by month actual vs. budget -- I will get this yet :)

THANK YOU very much :)

Hi tenchie,

A suggestion: If your companies have similar budgets, means that of equal size, you just need to show one bar for ideal budget and remaining three showing composition of all the three, actual+over/under budget. But that works for equal sized budgets only.

Regards,

actually it's quite a discrepancy between the two - (one has a montly budget of approximately 1500.00) while the other can be anywhere from 10,000.00 to 20,000.00.... but the two combined make up the overall cost of the entire project.... so what to do in that case?:)

Just add two more series for the other company

Hui THANK YOU that looks like that might be just what I need :)

I very much appreciate the assistance - and I'm sure my boss will also :)

Have a wonderful day!
