How to create a collapsable outline with plus and minus signs

I am interested in creating collapsible outline which can be expanded and collapsed with plus and minus signs just like you see on various applications.

Is it possible to do this in Excel w/o using the Subtotal feature?

My outline contains a list of tasks so numbers are not involved.

Can anybody point me in the right direction? Where should I begin?

As per my understanding you are saying about outlines. For the same you have to go like below :
Excel Ribbon => Data => Outline => Group
then a corresponding expand & collapse button will appear on left side for rows & on above side of column header for respective columns
You may also change location of plus & minus sign from top to bottom or vice-versa.

Ok. I forgot about that. Never used it much but I just played around with it and I think I've got the results I wanted. Thank you.

Shift + Alt + Right Arrow to Group
Shift + Alt + Right Arrow again to increase Group Indent level
Shift + Alt + Left Arrow to Ungroup

It rotated my whole system screen i tried ctrl + alt + left arrow ????
please try if we have short cut for excel why its not working on it and rotating screen instead of expanding grouped row

It sounds like your video driver has hijacked that key sequence
or it could be a local Language issue, what language are you working in?

@ Hui when i hover my mouse Excel Ribbon => Data => Outline => Group/Ungroup
then it shows

Please let me know how to check my system language. However currently i am using excel 2010.
