% variance vs % achievement - negative values

Hi,

I am doing some fairly long-winded work on % achievements and wanted to ensure i was using the right calculation for negative values...

% variance
Where actual and goal are positive, can be calculated as Actual/Goal-100%.
Where goal is negative, should it be -Actual/Goal+100% ?

% achievement
Where actual and goal are positive, can be calculated as Actual/Goal.
Where goal is negative, should it be -Actual/Goal+200% ?

Within my attachment, those in red are the ones i want to clarify.

Hoping you can help my poor little brain,
Paul

Hi ,

I think it may be somewhat more complicated by what your definition of variance , since it is not the strict definition that the statistical term has.

Suppose a goal is any number , whether positive or negative is immaterial , how is the variance to be defined as ?

When a goal is positive , and the actual is greater than the goal , is this positive variance ?

When a goal is positive , and the actual is less than the goal , is this negative variance ?

Similarly , when a goal is negative , and the actual is more positive than the goal , is this positive variance ?

When a goal is negative , and the actual is more negative than the goal , is this negative variance ?

What would be the achievement values under these same circumstances ?
