show limited text data in the cells, which get populated with the detailed data on a click

I am developing an excel sheet, which contains detailed text values per column. For example,

Action 1:
"Shri S. P. Juneja presented the current status of Rawalpindi campus to the Board, as highlighted in the agenda note. The Board noted that the revised cost of Rs. 61.68 crores has been prepared considering the changes in the scope of work and is based on the preliminary estimates provided by CPWD. Shri Rathore informed the Board that as per the funding approval, 65% of capital expenditure of Mehrauli Centre will be funded by NNBB; however, in a recent development IPT was advised by NNBB that they will fund only those projects which are approved by Cabinet. The matter has been taken up with Ministry.

I wish that the excel cell just shows the limited rephrased text/Summary,for example Action 1's detailed text as stated above is substituted by 'S.P. Juneja's Presentation' which on a click populates the same cell with the detailed text in a text wrapped format.

Further, apart from populating the cells individually, there could be an option which populates all or selected cells of the column with the detailed text with the single click.

What can be done?

Thanks!

Hi Niharika ,

The first point about what you want to do is that for Excel to display the full text , it is clear that that text has to be available in some location in the workbook.

The second point is that for a shortened rephrased text to be displayed , this too has to be available in some location , and associated with the full text.

How do you propose to do this ?

Thanks Narayan ji and anonymous for replying to my email.

Actually, I first created another column with shortened rephrased text, next to the column with detailed txt and then hid the column with detailed text. I had used the text wrap so that the detailed text would properly show on the window. However, due to this the sizes of all the cells are readjusted to become quite bigger.

So, basically I want this:

1. when the detailed text is showing, the cells are sized according to the detailed text.
2. when the detailed text is hidden, the cells are sized according to the rest of the cells.
3. Instead of unhiding the entire column, could just one cell of the column be unhidden?

I am quite a beginner in excel for that matter. No experience in VBA

Hi Niharika ,

Starting with 3 - the answer is NO. When unhiding a column , all cells in that column are unhidden ; of course if any entire rows are hidden , then when you unhide a column , the cell whose entire row is hidden will continue to remain hidden.

I doubt that 1 and 2 can be done without VBA ; either way , for anyone to contribute an answer , it would help if you could upload a sample file where there are at least half a dozen such entries , which have both the detailed and rephrased shortened text.

If VBA is acceptable , please let me know , since otherwise there is no use my attempting a solution.

Narayan
