Query about format of File

ThrottleWorks

Excel Ninja
Hi,

I have a query about format of File.

One of my colleague has told me that it is a good practice to save the excel workbook in “Binary” format.

I do not know the logic behind, can anyone please explain this to me.

It is not an urgent issue, I just want to know from knowledge perspective.

Excel Binary Files *.xlb (95-2003) or *.xlsb (2007+)

contain inbuilt compression and can dramatically save space, dependent on why the file is big in the first place.

If your file is straight formulas and data you'll save lots of space

If it contains lots of Pictures or other objects you'll save some space

Binary files as well as saving space actually open faster

Binary files can contain VBA Macros just like a normal *.xlsm file

There is no known problems with using them as a default file type

Hui Sir, thanks a lot for the help.

I will try to save my files in Binary format whenever possible.

Sir, I have one more question related to this.

When we try to save as the file, we get lot of options for the file format.

By default option on my PC is "Excel Workbook", is there any way we can change this setting to "Binary".

Thanks a lot once again, have a nice day.

I normally don't worry about saving files as Binary until they get past 8-10MB in size

You really won't see much difference and Hard Disk space is cheap and plentyful these days

(I can't believe I just said that)

To Change the default file format

Goto File, Options, Save

Change the Save Files in this Format dialog

Yes Sir, I got your point, I was under impression that it will be real quick for me.

My file is less than 3 MB.

But thanks a lot for the help, now I know the difference as well settings for changing default option.

Have a nice day.
