Pivot table does not show previous month change on Jan

I use pivot table to show %change, using this:

SHOW VALUES AS > % DIFFERENCE FROM > Base Field Month > Base item (previous)

Problem: in Jan 2012 or Jan 2013, pivot table does not calculate %difference from previous month!

That's because (previous) is in context of Field Month. And there is no month previous to Jan.

If you need to do %difference for entire duration, add helper column in source that has yyyy-mm. Then use that as your field.

Alternately you can use PowerPivot for more flexible time intelligence, if you have it.
