Issue with named ranges when compatability mode removed.

Hello, I have a workbook that contained multiple named ranges that I have used for validation and dependent drop down lists. Everything was working fine until I saved in Excel 2010 (which removed this from compatability mode). Now for some reason, any of the named ranges that had a number in the name now shows up with and underscore at the beginning (MMA2 now looks like _MMA2) I have tried to edit the name with no luck. The prompt keeps telling me that the new name without the underscore is not valid. I have deleted the name range with undersore and tried to create a new one without the underscore, but I keep getting prompt that name is not valid. Really stuck on this one, any help would be gratly apreciated.

OK, I think the problem is that with the expanded colums in 2010, MMA2 is now interpreted as a cell reference. I have been searching and found that this is not allowed in names for named ranges. Appears the underscore was added for this reason. Does anyone have a solution to this issue other than remaining in excel 2003

Hi ,

This is happening because a range name such as MMA2 which was valid in Excel 2003 with its maximum of 256 columns , is now invalid in Excel 2007 and later versions , where the maximum number of columns is 16384 so that now MMA2 is a cell address.
