Heat maps

I am learning about Heat Maps. These looks pretty cool. My questions are based on this webpage:

http://chandoo.org/wp/2008/07/09/partition-charts-excel-pie-alternative-visualization-hack/

1. Is there a finished file that I can download so I can see the raw data?
2. What is the different between a Heat Map and a partition chart?
3. In Step 3, how do you get the Conditional Format window with multiple conditions to appear? I click the Conditional Formatting button, but I don't see any option that looks like the graphic in step #3. I am using Excel 2010.

On the following webpage:

http://chandoo.org/wp/2008/07/10/partition-charts-visualization-fun/

1. See step #2 which says "Lets say you want to show 3 pies, one for 30%, another for 48% and the last one for 32% (well, just kidding, you can only 110% of your work, not 110% of your pies) so 22%."

Instead of pies, does Chandoo really mean 3 slices inside of one pie? I take 3 pies to mean 3 separate pie charts.

Hi DN

Here is a couple of examples of heat maps, one of Australia and the other the states.

A heat map is a collection of shapes which has it's shading cunningly altered through formula. The partition chart from the Chandoo site looks like glorified conditional formatting. :)

I think Chandoo means 1 chart 3 peices. Three pie charts with one category each would look odd- ie a 3 full circles in blue, green and red. Would not tell you very much.

Take care

Hi ,

I think that a heat map shows varying degrees of intensity ; this intensity can refer to the number of calls to a call center at different periods of the day , accidents at different places in a city ; the basic premise is that the various pieces of data have no correlation with each other.

A partition chart tries to show relationships ; a very good example of this is here :

Ok so a partition charts shows a hierarchy. Thank you for the references.
