Formatting font color within a cell

I have a text string 30 characters long. In the formula bar, I will highlight characters 10-15 and apply a red font color. While the cursor is still in the formula bar, the characters will turn red. So far so good.

But then when I hit enter, to get out of the cell, the red format is no longer applied. I have successfully applied in cell color formatting before but for some reason its not working now.

I must be overlooking something. Does anybody have any idea what I am doing wrong?

I tried this in a new workbook and it did work. So it seems like there is something about my current workbook that is preventing me from doing this. Is there an option of some sort that restricts in-cell editing?

Hi ,

There is an option in Excel Options , Advanced , which says :

Allow editing directly in cells

If this checkbox is checked , it allows you to edit the contents of a cell within the cell itself ; when you select a cell and press F2 to edit , you can see the cursor in the cell contents , select the text you want to color and format it accordingly.

In either case , I don't see the text changing its format in the formula bar , though it changes in the cell itself.
