Converting Latitude and Longitiude for North American Continent to coordinates

Hi Guys,
Inspired by Chandoo's "Olympic medals won by Country" , I am attempting to find the right formula to convert U.S. States latitudes and longitudes to X and Y coordinates and use them on a map.
STATES Lat Long
AK 64.2 -149.494
AL 32.318 -86.9
AR 34.736 -92.33
AZ 33.44846 -112.074
CA 38.55561 -121.469
CO 39.73917 -104.984

In Chandoo's world map, X and Y coordinates were derived using {=(90-D5)*(200/360)} and {=(90-C6)*(100/180)} respectively.

For a specific continent or country like America, I am looking for the right formula to use to get X and Y coordinates. Please advise.
