Combo Box

is it possible to have a Combo Box display text and not a number in the cell link? I know you can utimately use a index formula to turn that number into text.

I have a column of Salesperson. The combo box is dynamic to feed off something else to show you only certain salesperson. Anyway to pull the person name as text and not a number without a index formula?

Currently i have use the combo box to pull a choice on the list. And depending on the list certain legal wording would appear on a different cell, in different languages.

I guess you need to add a helper column next to your sales rep. example, column A has names and column B is 1,2,3,4,...

on a hidden worksheet there is a column of 1,2,3,4,... in column A and legal wordings in different languages would be on column B,C,D,E...etc.

that way, when you index from the hidden worksheet you can demonstrate the data of the corresponding numbers 1,2,3,4,...

When you do format control in the combobox it's linked to cell $N$21. When I select the name say Edgar Martinez in the combo box it puts a 27 in cell N21. Then when I select Joel Nester it puts a value of 13 in N21. How can you make that linked cell N21 display Joel Nester instead of 13 without a Index formula? Anyway to make N21 display the persons name and not a value?

Hi ,

I have a combobox in a worksheet ; the list of names to be displayed in the combobox is in say , J8:J11 ; the combobox properties have been assigned as follows :

ListFillRange : J8:J11

LinkedCell : O8

When I select any text item from the combobox , the same item , as text , appears in the linked cell O8.

How is your situation different from this ? I am using Excel 2007.

I am using excel 2007. The linked cell on mine is displaying the number not the value. Yuo put ListFillRange. That is not an option on my combobox. I'm using the Forms ComboBox and on my control it has Input Range, Cell Link, Drop Down Lines. I tried it on a new workbook with a different set of test data and it still displays the number in the cell link not the names in my combo box.

Ultimately I want to take the value from my combo box and select it in a vb code to update other parts of my workbook. I have over 3000 salesperson names in the list. How can i select the text name from the combo box and use it. The cell link gives me a number.

Ahhh I didn't try that one. the activeX box worked. I tried it with putting the cell range like you had above and it worked. I changed it to a defined name and it worked also. Thanks.

As Narayank991 points out, the ActiveX control gives you more options, and might be your best bet. Otherwise, if you need/want to use the Forms control, there's no getting around having the Form link produce a number. However, you can use a INDEX formula to quickly get the text. Something like:

=INDEX(ListOfChoices,LinkedCell)
